Lolita (who was first called Tokitae) was violently taken from her family in a round-up in Penn Cove, Whidbey Island, in August of 1970, in which many orcas died and orca families were destroyed. Lolita is the only survivor of the Penn Cove atrocity.
August 2010 marked Lolita Tokitae’s 40th year of being compelled to perform tricks twice a day for food day after day, year after year. She has been without companionship of her …own species since her tank mate and relative Hugo killed himself in 1980 at 15 years of age, of a brain aneurysm brought on by repeated attempts at likely suicide by bashing at speed into the side of the tank. Lolita Tokitae continues to be held in this small substandard tank at the dilapidated Miami Seaquarium. She is approximately 21 feet long (6.4 metres) and weighs 7,000 pounds (3175 kg) Her tank is 6 metres deep at the deepest point and a mere 3.6 metres deep around the edges. The pool is only about 10 metres wide. She has effectively been in prison for 40 years, thousands of miles from her family in the Southern Resident group L pod and her home. Though Resident orcas are highly social and deeply connected to family, she looks up at the stars alone every night when she gets a respite from the mind-numbing routines she is forced to perform daily. She has had nothing to occupy her tremendous intelligence and no one to converse with since 1980. Orca Network has had a science based plan to return her to a sea pen in the San Juans for many years. Our plan and desire is not to dump her in the sea and wish her good luck. We will support her, and her family is still out there. Please join us to distribute information, and to help people become aware of the significant ethical wrong that orca captivity and captive breeding is. Lolita is the focus for worldwide efforts to end this atrocity. I will provide 200 flyers to hand out with suggestions for further action and research. http://www.mondaymag.com/articles/entry/a-sad-whale-tale/food-and-life/ http://www.timescolonist.com/life/orca+slave+born+Aren+happy/3684150/story.html Orca Network: http://www.orcanetwork.org/captivity/lolitacapture.html Shelby’s website in Miami: http://www.savelolita.com/ Tim Gorski’s Rattle the Cage Productions for dvd Lolita: Slave to Entertainment: ~For more info: freecaptiveorcas@gmail.com Valentine’s protest for Lolita’s retirement
